On Umrah you rely on your phone. The Nusuk app holds your permits, maps get you between your hotel and the Haram, and family at home want photos and calls. An eSIM for Umrah is one of the simplest ways to get mobile data as soon as you land in Jeddah or Madinah. There is no SIM shop to find after a long journey.

So what is the best eSIM for Umrah? It is the one that fits your phone, your dates and your data use. This guide covers phone checks, data needs and what to compare between Saudi Arabia eSIM plans, without crowning one brand “the best”. Quick answer

  • Phone supports eSIM and is unlocked? A data-only Saudi Arabia eSIM, installed at home before you fly, is usually the easiest choice for a typical Umrah trip.
  • Keep your home SIM on for bank SMS codes, with data roaming switched off on that line.
  • Choose by fit, not brand: validity for your whole trip, the Saudi network the plan uses, enough data, and hotspot if family will share it.
  • Need a Saudi number or a long stay? A local SIM from STC, Mobily or Zain may suit you better, with identity checks at registration.

Do you need an eSIM for Umrah? Your options compared

You need data of some kind. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah lists Umrah permits and Rawdah visit permits as free services on the Nusuk app and website. Hotel Wi-Fi does not follow you to the Haram.

Roaming on your home SIM Travel eSIM Saudi local SIM
Setup Activate a roaming bundle before you leave Install at home, switch on when you land Buy and register in Saudi Arabia
Phone number Keeps your home number Usually data only; home SIM stays on in dual-SIM phones Saudi number
Identity checks None extra Usually none Identity and biometric checks
Watch out for High charges without a bundle Phone must support eSIM and be unlocked Queues after a long journey
Often suits Very short trips, light use Most Umrah trips Long stays, heavy use

From Pakistan: if your network offers a Saudi or Umrah roaming bundle, compare its data and validity with an eSIM plan. From the UK: UK networks set their own charges for Saudi Arabia, so check yours before relying on roaming. For the bigger picture, read our guide to eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM.

Check your phone first

Is it eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked?

  • iPhone: Apple says the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later support eSIM. To check for a lock, go to Settings > General > About. “No SIM restrictions” next to Carrier Lock means it is unlocked. Only your current network can unlock it.
  • Samsung Galaxy: go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager (SIM card manager on some models). An Add eSIM or Add mobile plan option means the phone most likely supports eSIM.
  • Google Pixel: go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Google says a Pixel 3a or later can use a physical SIM and an eSIM together.
  • Other Android phones: look in Mobile network or SIM settings for an eSIM option.

Pakistani-bought vs abroad-bought phones

  • Region matters. Some models sold in certain regions lack eSIM. Apple notes that in mainland China only a few of its newest iPhones have it. Check the settings.
  • Contract phones may be locked. Ask your network to unlock it well before you travel.
  • Keep your home SIM for codes. On a dual-SIM phone, keep your Pakistani or UK line on for calls and SMS codes. Use the eSIM for data.
  • Back in Pakistan, a phone bought abroad and used on a Pakistani network may need registration on PTA DIRBS.

How much data do pilgrims typically need?

There is no single right number. Think about how you use your phone:

  • Light: messages, the Nusuk app, maps, ride booking and a few photos.
  • Medium: the above, plus social media and short video calls home.
  • Heavy: long daily video calls, streaming, uploading lots of video, or sharing data with family.

Video uses far more data than messages or maps, so make long calls on hotel Wi-Fi and turn off automatic photo backup on mobile data. Unsure? A mid-size plan that allows top-ups is safer than guessing.

What to compare between eSIMs

Which Saudi network the eSIM uses (STC, Mobily, Zain)

Saudi Arabia’s main mobile networks are STC, Mobily and Zain, and a travel eSIM connects through one or more of them. When we checked in October 2026, one large provider’s Saudi plan named a single network. Another listed all three. The plan page should tell you which.

Note that a travel eSIM using STC’s network is not an STC SIM: you are a visitor on that network, under the eSIM provider’s terms.

Want to check coverage at your hotel in Makkah or Madinah? The Saudi regulator, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), offers a free Coverage Maps service. You pick a spot on the map and see network coverage there.

Data-only vs plans with a local number; hotspot

  • Most travel eSIMs are data only: internet, but no Saudi number for normal calls or SMS.
  • WhatsApp keeps your number: it works on your existing account over the eSIM’s data.
  • Hotspot rules vary: one provider we checked said it “depends on operator”. Check before you buy if you will share data.

Validity length vs trip length; top-ups

  • Pick a validity that covers your whole trip, plus a spare day for delays.
  • Check when validity starts: on installation, or on first connection in Saudi Arabia.
  • Check how to top up, ideally in the provider’s app.
  • For “unlimited” plans, read the fair-use terms; speeds may be reduced after heavy use.

Regional plans if you also visit the UAE or Pakistan

A Middle East regional plan can cover Saudi Arabia and Dubai if you add a UAE stop (see our Pakistan to Dubai travel checklist). UK families also visiting Pakistan can compare a regional plan with two country eSIMs. Regional is not always cheaper.

Buying a local Saudi SIM instead: what to expect

STC, Mobily, Zain and some smaller brands sell local SIMs and eSIMs. A local line gives you a Saudi number, which can suit long stays or heavy use.

  • Registration: CST requires prepaid, postpaid and data SIMs to be verified by fingerprint or through the Absher system. Expect to show your passport and give your fingerprints.
  • Operator apps: in May 2025, CST announced that international pilgrims could request an eSIM in Saudi operators’ apps. The eSIM is verified by biometric checks in the Absher app, with no branch visit. The announcement came in the Hajj season and does not say whether it covers Umrah visitors, so check the operator’s app.
  • Practical points: airport counters can have queues, and on a single-SIM phone a local SIM replaces your home SIM and its SMS codes.

This section is general guidance. Confirm current rules with the operator or CST before you travel.

Step-by-step: install before you fly, activate on landing

  1. Check your phone for eSIM support and carrier lock.
  2. Choose a plan: country or regional, validity, data size, network and hotspot.
  3. Buy it on the provider’s website or app, and keep the QR code on another device or on paper.
  4. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly if validity starts on first connection. On iPhone, use Settings > Mobile Data (Cellular) > Add eSIM.
  5. Label your lines, for example “Home” and “Saudi”.
  6. When you land, turn on the eSIM line, switch on data roaming for that line, and set it as your mobile data line.
  7. Turn off data roaming on your home line, but leave the line on for calls and SMS codes if you need them.
  8. Test before leaving the airport with maps and the Nusuk app. If nothing connects, restart, recheck step 6, then contact the provider’s support.

Tips for Ramadan and peak seasons

  • Expect slower data in crowds. In Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, huge numbers of people share the same networks around the Haram.
  • Download offline maps of Makkah and Madinah, and save your hotel address in English and Arabic.
  • Load your Nusuk permits and top up early, while you have a good connection.
  • Agree a meeting point with your group in case phones cannot connect.
  • Carry a power bank in hand luggage, within your airline’s rules.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying before checking the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
  • Installing too early when validity starts on installation.
  • Deleting the eSIM while troubleshooting (many can only be installed once).
  • Leaving data roaming on for the home SIM.
  • Assuming a travel eSIM gives you a Saudi number.

Quick checklist

  • Phone supports eSIM and shows no carrier lock
  • Plan covers your full dates (and the UAE or Pakistan if needed)
  • Network, hotspot and top-up rules checked
  • eSIM installed on Wi-Fi, QR code backed up
  • Home SIM on for codes, data roaming off on that line
  • Offline maps downloaded, power bank packed
  • Travel insurance details saved on your phone

How Voyfaro can help

Voyfaro is an online travel help and referral service. We do not sell eSIMs, issue visas or take payments.

  • Phone check: send us your phone model and where you bought it, and we help you check eSIM support.
  • Plan comparison: we compare Saudi and regional plans from partners such as Airalo, Yesim and Saily. See our eSIM help page.
  • You buy directly: you pay on the partner’s website, and their support handles activation.
  • The rest of the trip: we can also help you compare flights to Jeddah or Madinah, hotels in Makkah or Madinah and travel insurance.

We do not arrange Umrah visas or packages. Pakistani pilgrims generally get these through an approved Umrah operator. The Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) lists attested Umrah tour operators on its website. Visa routes differ by passport, so treat this as general guidance and confirm with your operator or the official sources. Our visa guidance page explains how we point you to official links. FAQ

What is the best eSIM for Umrah?

There is no single best one. The best eSIM for Umrah in Saudi Arabia works on your phone and covers your dates. It uses a network with good coverage where you stay, with enough data, hotspot if needed and easy top-ups.

Does a Saudi eSIM give me a local number for WhatsApp?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data only, and WhatsApp keeps working on your existing number over the eSIM’s data. For a Saudi number, get a local SIM from a Saudi operator.

Can I use my Pakistani SIM in Saudi Arabia for Umrah?

Yes, if international roaming is active on your line. Ask your network about a Saudi roaming bundle first, as data without one can be expensive. Many pilgrims keep the Pakistani SIM on for codes and use an eSIM for data.

Will my eSIM work in both Makkah and Madinah?

A Saudi Arabia plan covers the whole country, including both cities. Signal at a specific spot can vary, so check the plan’s network on the CST Coverage Maps and download offline maps.

Is it better to buy a SIM at Jeddah airport or an eSIM before travel?

An eSIM gives you data on landing with no queue or registration, but needs a compatible, unlocked phone. An airport SIM gives you a Saudi number, with registration checks and possible queues. For most short trips, the eSIM is simpler.

Can I get an STC, Mobily or Zain eSIM for Umrah?

Saudi operators sell local eSIMs, but they are registered to your identity with fingerprint or Absher checks. CST’s 2025 app-based eSIM service was announced for pilgrims in the Hajj season. Check the operator’s app for what applies to Umrah visitors now.
